Dell Precision 7550 Review: Mobile Workstation Power with Classic Bulk

September 25, 2020 By Notebook Center Editorial Team DELL
Summary: Dell Precision 7550 is a heavy 15.6-inch workstation with Core i7-10875H, Quadro RTX 4000, strong upgrade options, and broad ports, but higher heat and noise under load.

Editor note: This is an original English adaptation prepared by Notebook Center from the Notebook-Center.ru source review.

Overview

Dell Precision 7550 is a 15.6-inch mobile workstation focused on sustained professional workloads, not slim design. The tested configuration pairs an Intel Core i7-10875H with NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000 graphics, 16 GB RAM, and a 1 TB SSD. The source review highlights a rigid metal chassis, strong upgrade options, and a large 95 Wh battery, while noting heat, fan noise under load, and modest display contrast.

Design and Build

The chassis uses metal panels and feels very rigid, with no visible flex in the lid or keyboard deck during normal pressure. The styling is restrained and business-like, with matte surfaces that resist fingerprints and a rubberized palm rest. This is a thick and heavy workstation at 2.45 kg, but the larger body allows broad internal upgrade access, including four RAM slots and three storage bays.

Display, Audio, and Webcam

The 4K matte IPS panel reaches about 450 nits in the source test and remains readable indoors and in bright environments. Reported color coverage is 100% sRGB and about 85% AdobeRGB, with no PWM detected. The main trade-off is lower contrast and a relatively slow 34 ms response time. Speaker output stays clean at high volume, while the 1 MP webcam is usable but soft and grainy.

Keyboard and Input

The keyboard is spill-resistant, includes a full numpad, and keeps a stable deck with minimal flex. Key travel is medium, feedback is clear, and two-level white backlighting supports low-light work. The touchpad is compact but smooth and responsive, and the dedicated click buttons are quiet. A fingerprint reader is integrated into the power button.

Performance, Ports, and Battery

With the Core i7-10875H and Quadro RTX 4000, Precision 7550 targets CAD, visualization, and other professional GPU workloads. Port selection is broad: USB-A, dual Thunderbolt 3, HDMI, Mini DisplayPort, RJ-45, SD card, and smart card support. The 95 Wh battery is rated in the source review at around 8 hours of web use at 50% brightness on integrated graphics, dropping significantly when the discrete GPU is active. Under heavy load, keyboard-center temperatures can reach about 50 C and fan noise rises to roughly 50-52 dB.

Verdict

Dell Precision 7550 is built for users who prioritize workstation performance, expansion options, and connectivity over portability. Its practical strengths are strong professional graphics, upgrade flexibility, and a comprehensive port set. The main compromises are weight, high load noise/heat, and display contrast that is less impressive than its resolution suggests.
