Overview

The Lenovo ThinkPad P1 (2nd Gen) is a portable workstation for engineers, designers, and other users with demanding workloads. This tested configuration includes a 15.6-inch matte 4K IPS display, an Intel Core i7-9750H processor, NVIDIA Quadro T1000 graphics, 16 GB RAM, and a 512 GB SSD. The key idea is clear: workstation-class capability in a relatively thin and light 1.7 kg chassis.

Design and Build

The chassis uses aluminum on the base and carbon fiber on the lid. It feels rigid, with no obvious flex in the lid or keyboard area during normal use. The hinge is stiff and stable, and the lid opens up to 180 degrees. As part of the ThinkPad family, this model is built to MIL-STD-810G durability expectations and is suitable for frequent office travel.

Display, Audio, and Webcam

The 15.6-inch 4K IPS panel is a major strength. In the source test, peak brightness reaches around 500 nits, so indoor and outdoor readability is strong. The matte finish helps reduce reflections, and the image appears sharp with high pixel density. The stereo speakers support Dolby Atmos and are loud enough for calls and video, but bass is limited. The 720p webcam quality is basic, while the IR function supports fast Windows Hello sign-in.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard is spill-resistant, backlit, and comfortable for long typing sessions. Large Enter and Shift keys improve accuracy, and the TrackPoint plus dedicated buttons are available for users who prefer classic ThinkPad navigation. The touchpad is smooth, responsive, and supports multitouch gestures. A fingerprint reader is placed to the right of the keyboard area for quick authentication.

Performance

With the Core i7-9750H and Quadro T1000, the system is positioned for professional workloads such as CAD, 3D rendering, and video editing. Daily office tasks and multitasking run without difficulty. In the source review, gaming was also possible at Full HD in tested titles, showing that the GPU can handle mixed work-and-play scenarios, although this machine is primarily a workstation.

Connectivity, Battery, and Thermals

Port selection is broad for business and engineering use: dual USB-A, dual Thunderbolt 3, HDMI, Mini Gigabit Ethernet, SD reader, smart-card reader, and audio jack. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. The 80 Wh battery delivered around 6 hours of web use at 150 nits and about 7 hours for 1080p streaming in the source test, but heavy workloads drained it much faster. Under load, bottom-surface temperatures can rise noticeably, and fan/coils may be audible in quiet rooms.

Verdict

The ThinkPad P1 (2nd Gen) is a well-built mobile workstation with a standout 4K matte display, solid input devices, and practical professional connectivity. Its main compromise is endurance and acoustic comfort under sustained heavy load. For users who value portability with workstation-class hardware and a high-quality screen, it remains a strong option in its class.
